On Monday, SMU's "Mustangs for Life" organization placed crosses on Dallas Hall Lawn to symbolize aborted fetuses. While we respect their right to free speech, their display, whether intentional or not, was heavy handed and shamed women for their personal choices. We want to clarify, this is a movement and a fundraiser about respecting everybody's own decisions and having SMU be a community of support and absolutely not one of shame.

Everyone can agree that abortions are a sensitive and complicated matter. That is why we are raising money for Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood actively helps to educate people and provides free or inexpensive contraceptives and healthcare. They are working to eliminate the NEED for abortions, as simply making it illegal is not solving the problem. Any amount helps, and showing support instead of shame is the way we want to do it. Thank you so much for showing that we can be a unified community rather than a school divided by this side or that side. This is OUR community, please show respect for everyone. There are two sides to every demonstration.

Stay tuned for more action.

Here are some statistics to consider:

264,746 children entered foster care in 2014 alone-translating to a child entering care every 2 minutes in the United States

107,918 children waiting to be adopted in September 30th, 2014

68% of u.s. women at risk for unintended pregnancy use contraceptives consistently and correctly throughout the course of any given year, these women account for only 5% of all unintended pregnancies

The 14% of women at risk who do not use or have access to contraception at all account for 54% of unintended pregnancy

Only 40% of teen mothers finish high school; fewer than 2% finish college by age 30

Statistics from the 2014 Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System and the Guttmacher Institute.

Hey everyone! On behalf of PP Greater Texas -- your local PP organization -- I just want to thank you for doing this. It's because of people like you that we're able to keep our doors open for our patients and families who rely on us for quality healthcare and science-based education. $5000 = 20,000 condoms or 500 packs of birth control or 50 annual exams including breast & cervical cancer screenings. This is going to help a lot of people. Thank you!! --Denise Rodriguez Public Affairs Manger PP Greater Texas

Re: the falsehoods in the comment below: "Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said that birth control activist Margaret Sanger "believed that people like me should be eliminated." He later clarified that he meant African-Americans. While Sanger indeed supported the eugenics movement, substantial evidence shows that she was not racist and in fact worked closely with black leaders and health care professionals. Carson’s statement bears no relation to historical reality. We rate the claim False." -Politifact, October 2015 http://www.politifact.com/new-hampshire/statements/2015/oct/05/ben-carson/did-margaret-sanger-believe-african-americans-shou/

You are very misinformed if you believe pp wants to end the need for abortion. They literally have quotas on the number of abortions they need to perform. Do you know the origins of planned parenthood and why it was created? It was literally created to eradicate black people from this planet. "Colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated." - Margaret Sanger. Founder of Planned Parenthood. Too many people try to pretend that are doing some good when in reality they murder hundreds of thousands of children a year and strategically position their abortion facilities in predominantly black and lower income areas. Do the research and think for yourselves.
